The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame, in Fort Worth Texas, honors cowgirls of the past and present who, through their determination and courage, helped shape the American West and even today encourage young women to follow their dreams.

A good start to your visit is the “Spirit of the Cowgirl “theater. This eight minute film, narrated by actor and singer Michael Martin Murphy, introduces cowgirls and tells their stories of sacrifices and accomplishments.

The Hall of Fame is entered through a magnificent rotunda and contains almost 200 honorees with their pictures and stories unfolding on interactive kiosks.

This fascinating museum also offers an “Arena” which boasts videos of female rodeo performers, rodeo memorabilia, and a view of rodeo fashions. There is an interactive computer exhibit which allows one-on-one interviews with famous cowgirls, and a life size bull you can ride to create a 10 second movie that will appear to show you riding in an old-style rodeo.

There is a gallery that introduces Hollywood cowgirls, including Dale Evans, Barbara Stanwyck and Patsy Montana. The gallery offers a theater with Katherine Ross narrating a film highlighting the accomplishments of these famous women.

The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame opened in 2002, and offers a wealth of history that will both entertain and inspire.

Racing fans start your engines! If you are planning a trip to Texas, one of the places you must visit is the Texas Motor Speedway. There are events scheduled there all throughout the year, not just when there is a race weekend. Tickets for upcoming NASCAR events are on sale now through the speedway website or by calling the speedway. These tickets are for next year’s events. While the drivers are off to other raceways, visitors to Texas can get a driving experience. Take your car on the track to find out what the drivers feel while they are driving. You can also take a tour of the speedway and see all the behind the scenes activities that you don’t get to see on television.
The speedway supports many local charities. Most of the money that is raised for Speedway Children’s Charities is brought in on race weekends, so go and support the kids in the area and see who wins the race at the same time. Several retired drivers offer their skills to people who want to visit the speedway. You can take a trip around the speedway with Dale Jarrett, Richard Petty or one of the other drivers who happen to be there at the time of your visit. The best time to visit the speedway is in the fall and winter. The weather is cooler, and the thunderstorms are not as prominent as they are in the spring and summer. There are souvenir stores all through the track for people to stock up on gifts for themselves as well as for other people. One of the other series that races at the track is Lonestar Legends. This group consists of more than 20 antique cars that are made for racing. Visit the website of Texas Motor Speedway to get directions to the track and hours of operation, and race on in for a great time!

Fort Worth may be part of a metropolitan area that includes the larger neighboring city of Dallas, but it is a major cultural attraction in its own right: The city is, in fact, closer to its Wild Western roots than Dallas is, and has been nicknamed “Cowtown.”

Some of the museums located in Fort Worth’s cultural district, just outside the downtown area, include:

1) The Modern Museum of Art, in a building designed by the Japanese architect Tadao Ando, is the state’s oldest art museum. There are also classes and workshops for both children and adults; among those for the former are classes that teach young people to make works from observation.

2) The Museum of Science and History includes the Noble Planetarium and several marvelous innovation studios for children, such as the Doodler, Imaginer, Inventor, Explorer, and Designer Studios.

3) The Cattle Raisers Museum is devoted to exhibits on the American cattle industry. You can go on a virtual roundup by video game!

4) The Amon Carter Museum houses a collection of rare illustrated books and works by the American artists Frederick Remington and Charles M. Russell, both of whom created many paintings and sculptures of the American West.

A visit to Fort Worth, Texas, is incomplete without attending Fort Worth’s Stock Show and Rodeo. This yearly event takes place in Fort Worth every January, and offers a vast array of entertainment.

Lasting a month long, the Stock Show and Rodeo records a daily attendance of 150,000. This is not a small event. Cowboys and cowgirls come from all over East Texas and beyond to take part in an exceptional celebration of western traditions.

Over 23 days, every January, visitors can experience the world’s best livestock and trade shows. Walk through aisles of exhibitions, showcasing the best livestock in Texas. Once finished, take the kids to get their faces painted in one of the many activities available for children in the carnival section.

The whole family will love the Stock Show and Rodeo’s “Moo-seum Experience,” which guides visitors through Fort Worth’s Museum of Science and History, with special reflection on Texas’s western heritage.

After a day of browsing exhibits and having fun, spend the evening watching professional rodeo athletes as they showcase their talents live. Stare in wonder and amazement as these athletes ride dangerous bulls, and then laugh heartily at the rodeo clowns.

There’s so much to do at this stock show, you’ll wish it lasted a full year instead of one month.

Even though the two cities are a mere 33 miles apart and a short 40 minute drive (depending on traffic) from each other, there’s a world of difference between the two, and each one will make no bones about it should it ever come up in conversation. The point being: you should probably not bring it up in conversation that you’re from Dallas if you’re visiting Fort Worth. The rivalry has been going on for decades, and even songwriters Sanger and Darlene Shafer made the opposition clear in their song recorded by George Straight, Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind?

Cold Fort Worth beer just ain’t no good for jealous.I try it night after night. You’re in someone else’s arms in Dallas.Does Fort Worth ever cross your mind?Darlin’ while you’re busy burning bridges,Burn one for me if you get time.’Cause good memories don’t fade so easy.Does Fort Worth ever cross you mind? You left me here to be with him in Dallas,And I know it hurt you at the time. But I wonder now if it makes a difference.Does Fort Worth ever cross your mind? You left me here to be with him in Dallas,And I know it hurt you at the time. But I wonder now if it makes a difference.Does Fort Worth ever cross your mind?Does Fort Worth ever, does Fort Worth ever,Does Fort Worth ever cross your mind?

Those lyrics would have any Fort Worth cowboy defending his turf, wouldn’t they?

When you’re looking to relax with great food and enjoy your favorite sporting game, you’re in need of a certain kind of space. All across America, brand name pubs provide the best way to enjoy a national sporting event. While these venues may not be a local gem, they provide the perfect snacks for the big game. For this week’s Thursday Three, we give you the best national pubs in Fort Worth.Baker St. Pub and Grill 6333 Camp Bowie BoulevardFort Worth, TX 76116-5448Inspired by the headquarters of the fictional Sherlock Holmes, foodies can enjoy such starters as Buffalo or Teriyaki Pub Wings (10 count) or the Baker Street Nachos (with choice of chicken, beef, or both). Of course, a British inspired pub wouldn’t be complete without some English menu items; choose from dishes such as Fish and Chips or Shepherd’s Pie. For fun, finish off your meal with a “Sex on Baker Street” drink.Flying Saucer111 E 4th StFort Worth, TX 76102Beer lovers will adore the selection of 100 plus beers on tap. To top off whichever beer you chose, indulge in a Bratwurst Plate or a River Rocket Sandwich (filled with Alaskan smoked salmon, jalapeno-pesto cream cheese, and other delicious toppings).Fox and Hound English Pub6051 SW Loop 820 322Fort Worth, TX 76132The Fox and Hound, another English inspired pub, provides delicious appetizers. If you visit with a group of friends, we particularly recommend the Play-Action Platter; not only is it a delicious combination of your favorite snacks, but purchasing the dish benefits St. Judes, too. Complete with baked Bavarian pretzels, mozzarella sticks, grand champion wings, and classic potato skins, it’s bound to feed everyone’s appetite. We particularly love the way it’s served on faux London newspapers.
